Shut up and DON’T take my money
Before you go:
- Keep a money jar for loose coins
- Invite your friends over instead of going out
- Clean out your closet
- Give up expensive habits
- Prepare your meals at home
- Watch movies online instead of going to the cinema/renting movies
- Buy in bulk
- Instead of buying new clothes, reconsider old ones
- Go to a library/second hand book store
- Make use of the those “Cheap Tuesdays”
- Only use ATMs associated with your bank
- Invite friends over for a home cooked meal instead of eating out
- Stop upgrading your electronics – iPhone 5 vs iPhone 5s, do you really need Siri?
- Do chores and help with cooking in exchange for rent (when living with parents)
- Get rid of cable TV
- Taking only cash on a night out limits how much you can spend.
- Ditch your landline
- Use energy-saving lightbulbs
- Give up your gym membership for outdoor workouts
- Stop social spending
- Cancel magazine subscriptions
- Turn lights off when you’re not in the room.
- Go generic vs main brand for simple spends – eg, Kleenex vs Coles Brand Tissues
- Do odd jobs
When you go:
- Use Skyscanner’s ‘Everywhere’ tool to find the cheapest flights from any airport
- Stop paying for excess baggage fees – If you have to, you probably packed too much
- Sign up for alerts for cheap airfares
- Stay somewhere with laundry facilities or find a local laundromat – in comparison to those hefty hotel laundry fees
- Cut your travel expenses
- If the hotel’s breakfast buffet isn’t included, don’t bother
- Get to know your destinations metro, rail and subway systems rather than taxis
- Book overnight flights (avoids paying for more accommodation)
- Check to see if your chosen destination’s rail systems offer Traveller Passes/Weekly Passes (these often cost less per day than buying a Day Ticket every day)
- Exchange money before you get to your destination, ATM fees are no fun oversees
- Consider Airbnb vs hotels for long stay
- Travel off season
- Go to the grocery store vs eating out
Tips for both:
- Stop snacking
- Use your own water bottle – stop re-buying plastic ones
- Create a budget and stick to it, then reassess
- Take home-brewed coffee to work in a travel mug
- Stop buying expensive takeout
- Stop paying for overpriced drinks in bars
- Keep your leftovers
- Identify wants vs needs
- Stop skipping breakfast – it just makes you snack more
- Eat less meat
- Use public transportation
- Stop paying $5 for coffee
- Don’t be so stingy that you don’t have fun
