MOVIES FOR THE SOLO TRAVELLER

If I had a dollar for every time my Dad has told me to “turn that bloody TV off”, I’d be a very wealthy girl. Alas, my TV is still on, most of the time anyway – and I’ve decided to use this to my advantage to create a list of all of my favourite movies that scream solo travel.

North of the Sun 2012 (45m)

One of my ultimate favourite films, “North of the Sun” is a pair of filmmaker-adventurer’s nine-month project living out their adventure – hiking out to a remote arctic beach in Norway, the two live on the beach, building a cabin made from washed up debris, whilst cleaning up the beach and surfing in below freezing temperatures. Now this film isn’t exactly a solo journey, although I feel it displays the same affect as the pair are so isolated out in the Norwegian wilderness.

I first came across this film at the Banff Film Festival – “North of the Sun” took both the grand prize and people’s choice awards.

Into the Wild 2007

“Into the Wild” is based off of a non-fiction book written by Jon Krakauer. “Into the Wild” is an international best seller, which has been printed in 14 different languages. Without trying to put any spoilers out there, the book was based on Christopher McCandless’s (or Alexander Supertramp’s) journey to Alaska. The author Jon Krakauer retraced McCandless’s steps to discover that McCandless left in order to find some sort of enlightenment out in the wilderness as sometimes finding oneself conflicts with being an active member of society.

One of my favourite solo journeys, this one is based in my homeland Australia – so you can imagine how much it tempts me to follow in these footsteps. Also adapted from a book, Tracks is an adaption of Robyn Davidson’s memoir, chronicling the author’s nine-month journey on camels across the Australian desert. In 1977, Robyn Davidson travels from Alice Springs across 2700kms of Australian deserts to the Indian Ocean with her dog and four camels

Wild 2014

Also based off of a non-fiction book, “Wild” is a memoir by Cheryl Strayed describing her 1,100 mile hike in a journey of self discovery. Based in 1995 (my year of birth!), Cheryl Strayed decides to hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Coast Trail alone as a way to heal herself following her divorce, the death of her mother and a year of destructive behaviour
