There aren’t a lot of movies set in Amsterdam, yet I’ve managed to pull together the top 10 movies to watch while in this Netherland destination…
1. The Fault in our Stars 2014 (Rated 7.8/10 on IMDb)
A hopeless romance, and a book by John Green that I made sure to read before the release of the movie, The Fault In Our Stars is about a 16year old cancer patient Hazel, who falls in love with Gus, a similarly afflicted teen from her support group. Hazel shares her love for a book “An Imperial Affliction” and Gus receives an invitation to come and meet the author in Amsterdam, they embark on an adventure of their short lifetime.
“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
2. Diamonds are Forever 1971 (Rated 6.7/10 on IMDb)
Sean Connery as Jame Bond 007, “a diamond smuggling investigation leads James Bond to Las Vegas, where he uncovers an evil plot involving a rich business tycoon”.
3. Girl with a Pearl Earring 2003 (Rated 7/10 on IMDb)
You probably know of the famous painting. This film is about the story of its making. A young peasant maid, played by Scarlett Johansson, starts working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth). She soon becomes his talented assistant and model for now of his most famous works.
4. Anne Frank: The Whole Story 2001 (TV mini series) (Rated 8/20 on IMDb)
Perfect for those after a little history, or even plan on visiting Anne Frank House, this TV mini series goes back to when the war began, and she was only a young girl. This series shows “a compassionate and sensitive televisual portrait of the Holocaust’s greatest diarist.”
5. Kidnapping Mr. Heineken 2015 (Rated 6.1/10 on IMDb)
Based on a true story in 1983, a group of men in Amsterdam plot to kidnap someone worth $60million, Mr. Heineken. With planning, execution and a dramatic aftermath, this resulted in the largest ransom every paid for an individual.
6. Amsterdamned 1988 (Rated 6.5/10 on IMDb)
An odd story that I stumbled across while researching, this film is an Action/Horror/Thriller type about a mysterious diver hidden in Amsterdam’s canal system that leaves a trail of gruesome murders. Leaving few clues for the detectives, they struggle to find the person behind the deaths.
Note: I would recommend not swimming in Amsterdam’s canals.
7. Midhunters 2004 (Rated 6.4/10 on IMDb)
Though not primarily set in Amsterdam, this thriller had scenes set in Amsterdam-Noord which you can access by ferry from Central Station. A group of FBI agents are taken to a remote island for stimulation training to catch an imaginary serial killer. The simulation exercise becomes dangerously real and the agents realise they need to fight for survival.
8. Oceans Twelve 2004 (Rated 6.4/10 on IMDb)
The sequel to Ocean’s 11, Daniel Ocean recruits one more team member in order to pull of three major heists in Europe.
9. Layer Cake 2004 (Rated 7.4/10 on IMDb) –
- Amsterdam makes an appearance
On the eve of his early retirement, a lucrative cocaine dealer is assigned two tough assignments. Though primarily filmed around London, some scenes give us a brief look at Amsterdam.
10. The Bourne Supermacy 2004 (Rated 7.8/10 on IMDb)
The 2nd of the Bourne series, “after Jason Bourne is framed for a CIA operation gone wrong, he is forced to resume to his former life as a trainer assassin to survive.”
What do you think? What would you watch while in Amsterdam?
