50 MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR BEFORE AND DURING TRAVEL

Shut up and DON’T take my money

Before you go:

  1. Keep a money jar for loose coins
  2. Invite your friends over instead of going out
  3. Clean out your closet
  4. Give up expensive habits
  5. Prepare your meals at home
  6. Watch movies online instead of going to the cinema/renting movies
  7. Buy in bulk
  8. Instead of buying new clothes, reconsider old ones
  9. Go to a library/second hand book store
  10. Make use of the those “Cheap Tuesdays”
  11. Only use ATMs associated with your bank
  12. Invite friends over for a home cooked meal instead of eating out
  13. Stop upgrading your electronics – iPhone 5 vs iPhone 5s, do you really need Siri?
  14. Do chores and help with cooking in exchange for rent (when living with parents)
  15. Get rid of cable TV
  16. Taking only cash on a night out limits how much you can spend.
  17. Ditch your landline

When you go:

  1. Use Skyscanner’s ‘Everywhere’ tool to find the cheapest flights from any airport
  2. Stop paying for excess baggage fees – If you have to, you probably packed too much
  3. Sign up for alerts for cheap airfares
  4. Stay somewhere with laundry facilities or find a local laundromat – in comparison to those hefty hotel laundry fees
  5. Cut your travel expenses
  6. If the hotel’s breakfast buffet isn’t included, don’t bother
  7. Get to know your destinations metro, rail and subway systems rather than taxis
  8. Book overnight flights (avoids paying for more accommodation)
  9. Check to see if your chosen destination’s rail systems offer Traveller Passes/Weekly Passes (these often cost less per day than buying a Day Ticket every day)
  10. Exchange money before you get to your destination, ATM fees are no fun oversees
  11. Consider Airbnb vs hotels for long stay
  12. Travel off season
  13. Go to the grocery store vs eating out

  8. Identify wants vs needs
  9. Stop skipping breakfast – it just makes you snack more
  10. Eat less meat
  11. Use public transportation
  12. Stop paying $5 for coffee
  13. Don’t be so stingy that you don’t have fun
